How to Choose the Best Dumbbells
Fixed pairs versus adjustable sets
Fixed pairs like the Amazon Basics Neoprene Dumbbell Pairs or SONGMICS Set of 2 Hex Dumbbells require zero setup time. However, they limit you to a single weight per pair. For wide versatility without storing multiple weights, the BRAINGAIN 15-in-1 Adjustable Dumbbell adjusts from 2.5kg to 24kg using a quick-twist handle. Plate-loaded options like the Yaheetech 30KG Adjustable Dumbbells Set give incremental control with individual plates, though changing loads takes longer with spinlock collars.
Versatility with barbell conversion sets
If your training includes deadlifts or overhead presses, 2-in-1 sets add functional options without extra equipment. The Straame 20KG Adjustable Dumbbell & Barbell Weight Set uses a 40cm foam-padded connector to join two bars, while the SONGMICS Dumbbell Set 2-in-1 includes a dedicated barbell bar. These sets let you switch between isolation moves and compound lifts, though changing configurations takes more time than using fixed dumbbells.
Choosing the right shape, coating, and grip
Hexagonal models like the Amazon Basics Rubber Encased Hex Dumbbell and SONGMICS Set of 2 Hex Dumbbells will not roll away on flat surfaces, making floor work easier. Neoprene coatings on Amazon Basics Neoprene sets provide a soft texture, while rubber encasing on the Amazon Basics Hex set absorbs impact. For heavy lifting, knurled metal on the BRAINGAIN pair or diamond-knurled plastic on the Yaheetech 30KG set offers high friction compared to smooth PVC or TPR grips.
Storage footprints for compact spaces
Storing multiple individual weights can clutter small flats or living rooms. The Amazon Basics Neoprene Dumbbell Weights Set includes a dedicated storage stand to keep 1kg, 2kg, and 3kg pairs organised. For higher weight capacities, the BRAINGAIN 15-in-1 Adjustable Dumbbell replaces 15 fixed pairs inside a single compact footprint.
Buying Guide & FAQ
What is the best dumbbells deal right now?
Our current top-ranked deal is the Yaheetech 30KG Adjustable Dumbbells Set, 2x15KG Free Weights for Home Gym at £29.99.
What is the price range for dumbbells?
Across our top 10 picks, prices currently range from £18.46 to £199.50 on Amazon UK.
Which dumbbells are best for fast weight changes during workouts?
The BRAINGAIN 15-in-1 Adjustable Dumbbell pair changes weight in about a second using its Twist handle mechanism. Plate-loaded dumbbells with spinlocks, such as the Yaheetech 20KG or Straame 20KG sets, require unscrewing collars and swapping plates manually between sets.
Can I convert dumbbell sets into a barbell?
Yes, both the Straame 20KG Adjustable Weight Set and the SONGMICS Dumbbell Set 2-in-1 feature conversion systems. The Straame set uses a 40cm foam-padded connector to join the dumbbell bars, while the SONGMICS set includes a dedicated barbell bar connecting two 10kg dumbbells.
What materials are used in fixed weight dumbbells?
Fixed options use solid metal cores with protective outer layers. The Amazon Basics Rubber Encased Hex Dumbbell features a solid cast iron core encased in shock-absorbing rubber. The SONGMICS Set of 2 Hex Dumbbells and Amazon Basics Neoprene Dumbbell Pairs use non-slip neoprene coatings over their internal structure.
How do hex dumbbells differ from round or plate-loaded dumbbells?
Hexagonal options like the Amazon Basics Rubber Encased Hex Dumbbell and SONGMICS Set of 2 Hex Dumbbells have flat sides that prevent them from rolling across the floor. Plate-loaded sets like the Yaheetech 30KG set use round weight plates secured by spinlock collars on threaded iron bars.
Which set includes a storage stand for light dumbbells?
The Amazon Basics Neoprene Dumbbell Weights Set comes with a dedicated storage stand designed to store its 1kg, 2kg, and 3kg pairs (6 dumbbells total).
What grip types are available across these dumbbells?
Grip options include easy-grip neoprene textures on Amazon Basics Neoprene pairs, non-slip TPR grips on the Straame set, and PVC grips on the Yaheetech 20KG set. For textured metal or hard plastic grips, the BRAINGAIN 15-in-1 pair features knurled grips, while the Yaheetech 30KG set uses diamond-knurled handles.
