An air purifier filters air; a dehumidifier removes moisture. Choose around the job you need done before comparing brands, app controls or headline room sizes.
This guide uses manufacturer information and UK ventilation guidance, rather than hands-on testing. The hero is an editorial illustration, not an exact product photograph.

Start with the problem, rather than the product name
For filtering airborne dust or pollen, compare a purifier's filter type, airflow and replacement availability. A particle filter and an activated-carbon filter do different jobs: do not assume that a particle-capture claim also establishes odour or gas removal. Meaco explains these filtration differences.
For excess moisture, compare dehumidifiers. The extracted water needs somewhere to go: check tank access, how you will empty it and whether your exact model supports continuous drainage. Laundry modes concern moisture removal from surrounding air; they are not a promise of a fixed drying time. Meaco's dehumidifier help centre explains why room temperature, airflow and fabric spacing affect drying.
If condensation keeps returning, do not turn the appliance choice into a diagnosis. The government's existing-home ventilation guide, which applies to England, explains how household moisture and inadequate ventilation contribute to condensation. An appliance does not fix a leak, repair an extractor or provide fresh-air ventilation. Raise persistent damp or mould with the property owner or an appropriate professional.
Does a combined dehumidifier and air purifier do both jobs?
Some machines do, with the specified filter fitted. Check the exact generation, capacity, included filter and operating modes. A washable dust screen protecting the machine is different from the additional filtration described for a dual-purpose model; the Meaco help centre distinguishes these arrangements.
Ask two separate questions: does the unit meet your humidity-control requirements, and what evidence describes its filtration? Do not compare its litres-per-day extraction figure with a purifier's CADR. They measure different things.
Our Meaco Arete One versus Two guide explains generation and capacity checks. This reviewed Arete One 10L example is restricted to Meaco's own offer; it is not the Two 12L or a recommendation for every room.
Compare purifier room claims on the same basis
Floor area is only part of the comparison. Check ceiling height, fan setting and the stated air-change basis behind the advertised area. Levoit's UK Core 600S page describes different areas for one and two air changes per hour; those figures are not interchangeable promises.
The following complete-purifier card is restricted to the reviewed Levoit UK offer. A replacement filter alone is a separate product.
Budget for the job you will actually use
Compare the delivered machine price, replacement filters, included accessories and likely operating hours. For an electricity scenario, calculate watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × your tariff per kWh. Actual consumption varies with settings and cycling; rated power alone cannot establish either appliance's annual bill.
Before buying, record the exact model, condition, room-rating assumptions and contents of each offer. Compare similar capacities and packages rather than treating every cheaper search result as an equivalent machine.
Frequently asked questions
Will an air purifier reduce humidity?
A standard filtering air purifier is not a dehumidifier. Choose a machine explicitly designed for moisture extraction if that is the job you need.
Will a dehumidifier replace ventilation?
No. Removing water from indoor air is different from exchanging indoor and outdoor air. Keep the property's ventilation arrangements maintained and follow their instructions.
Can a combined model replace two separate appliances?
It may suit your needs if its two functions meet your requirements. Check each function's specifications and the required filter, rather than treating the combined label as proof of equivalent performance.
